If you regularly use your fireplace or have a wood burning stove or wood insert having your chimney sweeping is an important maintenance item that you need to have done annually. Letting this go for too long can result in the buildup of creosote inside the chimney.
Avoid a Potentially Hazardous Fire With Regular Chimney Sweeping
Creosote is a buildup left on the inside of the chimney from volatile gases in the smoke that is released when you have a fire. These gases flow up into your chimney where they cool and condense leaving behind a black oily film. Over time if not properly maintained the creosote can build up even as much as a few inches thick. Once you get to this stage you have a serious fire hazard on your hands.
Creosote is highly flammable so if there is a buildup and you have a hot enough fire the creosote can ignite causing what is known as chimney fire. Chimney fires burn at really high temperatures (around 2000°F) and can sometimes go undetected for hours. These fires burn so hot the brick or masonry that the chimney is made of can get hot enough that it will ignite any wood that is touching it.
Having your chimney maintained will not only prevent a chimney fire but it can also alert you to any other conditions your chimney might have such as cracked tiles in your liner or loose bricks at the top. We also provide solutions for you for these types of issues as well.
If you just purchased a home with a fireplace or wood burning stove it’s important to have a chimney inspection done before you have your first fire. An inspection will tell you if you need to have a cleaning done and will alert you to any issues.
In Addition to Chimney Sweeping We Install Chimney Caps Too!
If you do not have a chimney cap you should consider having one installed. Even if you do not intend on using your fireplace chimney caps have other benefits for your chimney. They can lengthen the lifespan of the crown at the top of the chimney and keep any birds or other animals from getting in. A chimney swift is a bird with a loud chirp that like to make nests inside of chimneys but they are federally protected bird so if one decides to take up residence in your chimney there isn’t anything you can do about it until they are through nesting.
